Spencer Magnan

Spencer Magnan is an artist originally from Orillia, Ontario now living full-time in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal. Working across disciplines he moves between painting, installation, and performance in his work. In 2023 he obtained his diploma in Painting and Drawing from Concordia University. He’s exhibited work in multiple gallery spaces across Montreal and Ontario and has had his work published in books as well. As of 2024, a selection of his paintings are also represented by the Art Volte Collection in Montreal.

My creative process normally begins with a thought that gets stuck in my head. From here, I start thinking conceptually about the work, how it would function, and the space it occupies. Considering the form of an artwork is important in the planning, moving from an idea to a painting or a performance piece ends up translating ideas in different ways. A lot of my creative process is trial and error, especially when it comes to projects like my handmade cameras where the idea of what I want to create is informed by the process itself - it all becomes part of the finished product. My pieces can take anywhere from one day to a whole year to be considered done… but even then I find myself picking up old work from the previous year to re-examine and consider with fresh eyes.
